By the late 1830s, America’s pioneer railroads were coming of age with the first steps toward modern railroading. A powerful new breed of locomotive, built for improved service on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s expanding system, was the 4-2-0 “Pegasus.” Fast, agile, and elegant, Pegasus was an iron horse that more resembled its namesake winged stallion. For author Charles Dickens said of a sister engine that if it had spread its wings and flew away, no one would have been the least bit surprised!
